A bunion is a bony deformity or a large bony bump that develops at the base of your big toe joint. It occurs when the bones in the big toe joint move out of place. This causes your big toe joint to become prominent and stick out; sometimes causing discomfort when wearing shoes and with activity. Wearing tight narrow shoes can cause the bunion to become more painful and worse over time. Bunions form for many reasons; genetics, foot structure, medical conditions, or arthritis.
Some of the symptoms of a bunion include: swelling, redness, pain, limited motion to the big toe joint, a large bump at the level of the big toe joint. You should make an appointment to see a doctor when you have constant pain, redness, swelling, difficulty wearing shoes, etc.
The only way to eliminate a bunion is with surgical intervention; however not all bunions require bunion surgery. If you suffer from a bunion you should see a Foot and Ankle surgeon to get a full evaluation and determine which treatment is the right treatment plan for you.
